CRYOCHAPS have been designed not only to help in the rehabilitation after injury and return to exercise, but more importantly, be part of an everyday cool-down routine to focus on recovery & injury prevention.

CRYOCHAPS have been developed to mimic ice bath or cold water immersion which has become part of many athletes’ recovery phase. The general theory behind this cold therapy is that the cold exposure helps to combat the micro trauma (small tears) in tissues & resultant soreness caused by intense or repetitive exercise.

The cold therapy constricts blood vessels, flushes waste products & reduces swelling & tissue breakdown. Subsequently, as the tissue warms & the increased blood flow speeds circulation, the healing process is jump-started. CRYOCHAPS provide cold therapy & essential compression to be proactive against injury, or, to help the healing process after injury.

CRYOCHAPS were designed to meet the following criteria;

Ease of application, wraps to fit hind or front legs for a 15hh to 17hh horse or a 13hh to 14.3hh pony, a secure fit, compression, reusability, easy clean, lay flat in freezer & quick freezing but most of all, coverage of all tendon & ligament structures in the leg, whilst still maintaining the ability for the horse to move.

They are made in two parts, the ice gel & the material section. Smooth material is part of the ice gel boot, it will not freeze to the leg & is simple to wash off to keep clean. The gel is quick to cool & maintains low temperatures.

Stretch Neoprene makes up the material boot which provides not only a secure fit but compression, essential in recovery.

Equine Ice Bath Therapy - the indispensable ice wrap chap for horses post exercise and post injury for every discipline.

After Exercise

Cooling after exercise with ice cold water is commonplace to help recovery from intense performance in human athletes. This is thought to decrease the pain & swelling associated with trauma after exercise & helps to initiate healing.

Your horse is an athlete too & after intense exercise, cooling legs with CRYOCHAPS is akin to the science of application in humans, which may promote a faster recovery & better performance for the next day, as well as helping protect against injury. It is already common practice in many equine disciplines to ice or cold wrap the legs after exercise & competitions. Horses undergo specific fitness regimens for competition, application of CRYOCHAPS can become part of this routine to protect against injury. The other benefit is taking the heat out of legs that have been bandaged or booted for exercise. Studies have found that tendons like the superficial digital flexor tendon produce heat on exercise. The tendon is further insulated by boots and bandages, and without airflow, the temperatures could rise to dangerous levels which could lead to tendon cell death. Cryochaps again can be used immediately after exercise to decrease surface leg temperatures and help cool the leg to prevent injury.

After injury

Horse owners will have experienced the time-consuming process of having to hose down an injury to take the heat & swelling out. Whilst cold water may have a beneficial effect, using ice cold temperatures will maximise the cold temperature which is an important therapy for treating bruises & strains.

Applying CRYOCHAPS decreases leg temperature, this reduces internal bleeding to the injury site by vasoconstriction & so lessens swelling. Reducing temperature using CRYOCHAPS is like applying an ice pack in humans & has been found to;

  • Reduce pain by raising the pain threshold, thus overriding the pain sensation

  • Reduce muscle spasm & the risk of cell death by decreasing the rate of metabolism

  • Decrease nerve transmission in pain fibres & cause endorphin release

CRYOCHAPS cover all major ligaments & tendons from the proximal suspensory ligament right down to the suspensory branch & annular ligament. Swelling after injury tracks up as well as down, so CRYOCHAPS give you full coverage of the lower limb to treat the affected & surrounding area. As well as the essential cold therapy, CRYOCHAPS also provide the compression required in all recovery regimens.

CRYOCHAPS are a great idea for every horse owner’s medical kit & have been designed to be symmetrical so they will fit any leg. Please seek advice from your vet before using CRYOCHAPS for injury.

CRYOCHAPS – Routine use post injury

How to Use:

CRYOCHAPS can be placed flat in a standard freezer (-18° C) overnight, to receive the optimum cooling effect. The gel should not be rock hard when taken out of the freezer but still with a slight give when pressed. If they are completely stiff before application it will be harder to mould to the leg, allow to soften before application. Alternatively place in freezer for approx. 4 hours before immediate use.

Using Post Exercise, apply to the leg for 10-15 mins. Temperatures are maintained below 10 degrees for this time period. If your horse’s leg is not cool to the touch when you take Cryochaps off, they were not frozen adequately before application.

Within the first 24-48 hours after injury, apply for up to 20mins, temperatures against the leg will be maintained below 10°. Application can be repeated every 2-3 hours, ensure you take advice from your vet before using after injury. CRYOCHAPS should not be used on open wounds or if suspected infection. If your horse has sensitive legs, or clipped legs, it is advised to cover. CRYOCHAPS should not be left on the leg longer than 20 minutes as there is no medical benefit to be gained by leaving them on for longer and you run the risk of damaging the skin.
